I’m Booked: “The Light We Carry”

As a big fan of Michelle Obama’s autobiography, “Becoming,” I was excited yet hesitant to pick up her new book, “The Light We Carry.” I had high expectations and would be heartbroken if I was let down. Thankfully, I had nothing to worry about. 

While “Becoming” was an autobiography documenting Obama’s entire life, from her childhood in the southside of Chicago to her struggles and achievements as First Lady, “The Light We Carry” was slightly different. Although still containing details of Obama’s life, this book was more of a guide to life. Discussing topics like fear, family and love, the book remains vulnerable while it is meant to be applied to everyone’s life, not just her own. 

I found “The Light We Carry” to be engaging and sentimental in the best ways. There were moments where I felt seen, which is heartwarming in any book but especially the former First Lady’s. The personal anecdotes mixed with the life advice led to a pure and genuine book about what it’s like to be human. One of my favorite quotes from the book was, “We only hurt ourselves when we hide our realness away.” 

All in all, I immensely enjoyed “The Light We Carry” and recommend it to readers of all kinds. This book is relevant in many ways, regardless of your political party or genre preferences. It is a great book to start the new year! I’ll be back soon with another book review, but until then, I’m Booked.
