I’m Booked: “Between Two Kingdoms”

’m always on the lookout for an outdoorsy book involving a trip across the country. While that is not necessarily what I got from “Between Two Kingdoms” by Suleika Jaouad, I was amazed by it nonetheless. 

“Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted” is an autobiography about how Jaouad’s life was put on hold when she was diagnosed with cancer. Freshly out of college, Jaouad was excited to explore the world and combat the bad habits she developed as a student. However, after moving to Paris to become a paralegal, Jaouad faced mysterious health concerns. Eventually, she discovered she had cancer and was forced to return to New York with her parents and new boyfriend. 

The majority of the book describes, in detail, the difficulties Jaouad endured while undergoing treatment. Not a moment seemed easy, although she was comforted by the people she encountered along her journey. Honestly, a lot of the book is challenging to read, as it is graphic and heartbreaking. However, learning about Jaouad’s journey was very insightful and often emotional. 

While I was most excited to read about the cross-country road trip, that only happened at the end. Also, that part was less happy and carefree than I expected. Jaouad travels the country to meet people she had corresponded with while in the hospital. She finds friends in unexpected places and works hard to cope with everything she was forced to endure. 

Although the book was not what I expected, it was still impactful. Jaouad’s writing is spectacular and engaging throughout. There were many jaw-dropping quotes, but one example that stuck with me was, “May I be awake enough to notice when love appears and bold enough to pursue it without knowing where it will lead.” Therefore, I recommend reading “Between Two Kingdoms,” but be aware of some graphic and intense moments.
