I think it’s finally time for me to discuss my favorite book of all time: “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott. Be prepared for me to hype up this book as much as possible. I’m sorry, I can’t help it.

“Little Women” is a novel based in New England during the Civil War. It discusses the lives of the March sisters – Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy – as their family struggles with poverty, gender stereotypes and growing up. Although it was originally published in 1868, this book has remained a relatable classic for generations of women.

It’s written to make you fall in love with each character. While reading this story, you feel as though you are a March sister yourself. Through fighting and playing, Alcott beautifully captures what it means to be sisters. Even as the family goes through economic difficulties, they find a way to entertain themselves and be a beacon of hope to those around them.

Each sister has her own dreams, making the novel relatable to people with various interests. For example, Meg wishes to be an actress and have a family; Jo wants to become a famous writer; Beth, a beautiful pianist; and Amy, an excellent painter. Although each girl wants to make her way as an artist, they know it’s impossible because, during this time, women weren’t allowed to be anything other than mothers and wives. “Little Women” does a great job of showing how each girl copes with this painful truth.

Whether you’re following along on their adventures or enduring their hardships, it’s hard not to feel forever bonded with the March family. While there are many great quotes in this book, one of my favorites is, “Be comforted, dear soul! There is always light behind the clouds.”
